In April of 2020, I arrived back in Chapel Hill, NC from New York City, NY. At the time New York City was a Covid-19 hot spot with cases seeming to rise out of control. I started a self-imposed quarantine to prevent myself from possibly spreading the virus. I didn't leave the house for 2 weeks except late at night when I knew I would not come into contact with anyone. This is when I started shooting this series.

Shooting at night has been a big part of my work for almost 20 years and many of these are similar to scenes I shot in the early 2000s. The context made these feel completely different. I was also struck at the contrast of Chapel Hill to New York City when being outside. New York City at night had a feeling of deserted lifelessness while the natural world of Chapel Hill, with the streets surrounded by lush spring vegetation and suburban wildlife, seemed unaffected by the lack of a human presence.
